Each year, the National Institute of Building Sciences recognizes a member of the Institute or an affiliate council who has made a substantial contribution in support of the organization’s mission, goals and objectives. This year, the Institute presented its 2009 Member Award to Ronald Burton, Vice President of Advocacy and Research at the Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA).
Chairman of the Board Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA, FACHA, presented the award to Burton in recognition of his strong advocacy for building professionals and his dedication to achieving high-performance buildings.
“As BOMA representative on the Building Seismic Safety Council, Multihazard Mitigation Council and High Performance Building Council, Ron provides valuable input from a building owner’s perspective,” said Skaggs.
Burton serves the building industry through his efforts in the legislative, regulatory and building codes and standards arenas. He also works to find consensus among other building industry organizations. He is the vice chair of the International Code Council’s Industry Advisory Committee, he serves on the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council Executive Committee, and is a member of the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition.
“It’s very humbling to know that we are working on processes that will make a difference to our children and our grandchildren,” said Burton, upon accepting his award.
In his previous role as Senior Staff Vice President for the National Association of Home Builders, Burton was instrumental in the development of the International Residential Code. He also worked together with various construction community representatives to develop consistent and appropriate standard and building metrics for the creation of high-performing buildings.
Burton accepted the award during the Institute’s Annual Reception and Banquet, held December 7-10, during the Ecobuild America Conference in Washington, D.C.
