Building Industry to Develop Toolkit for Haiti
In the wake of the devastating 7.0–magnitude earthquake that occurred in Haiti on January 12, 2010, the National Institute of Building Sciences asked the United States codes and standards community to help provide guidance in the reconstruction of the island nation. The Institute put out a call to industry for assistance in the development of a toolkit to help guide Haiti in rebuilding. The Institute will deliver the toolkit to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton so that the Department of State could present it to Haiti for the reconstruction of its buildings and structures.
6/22/10 – White Paper on Building a Foundation for the Renewal of Haiti: Recommendations for a Long-Term Building Strategy
In order to advance the implementation of a long-term buildings program within Haiti focused on codes and standards, with the requisite education, training and enforcement, the Institute developed a white paper describing the necessary criteria to be considered. The paper has been shared with U.S. and Haitian government representatives, international donor organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Interested organizations are invited to endorse the paper and distribute it widely.
5/26/10 – Building Community and NGO Meeting on A Sustainable Buildings Program
The non-governmental organization (NGO) community has significant experience in responding to natural disasters. However, this response is largely tied to donor requirements focused on short-term, temporary solutions. This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss current activities within Haiti and opportunities to work toward a resilient rebuilding of Haiti. (Meeting Agenda)
