Experience Mars City at Building Innovation 2017

Take part in a special session to help build the future workforce during Building Innovation 2017—the National Institute of Building Sciences Fifth Annual Conference & Expo. On Day 1 of the Conference, Monday, January 9, 2017, at 3:30 pm, attendees can participate in a presentation of the Institute’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Program and the Future Workforce Program to discover ways to inspire, engage, educate and employ the next generation of building industry professionals.

Across many sectors of the building industry, there is a rising concern over the decreasing availability of a skilled workforce. Addressing this concern will take an industry-wide approach. Many organizations, including the Institute, are undertaking efforts to introduce the next generation of workers to various building professions. Join members of the Institute Board of Directors, representatives of the Consultative Council and other industry leaders as we explore a unique path forward to developing the future generation.

Institute Calls for Abstracts to Present at Building Innovation 2018

The National Institute of Building Sciences is gearing up to deliver the sixth iteration of the industry’s only all-inclusive Conference where members of the entire building community come together to connect, collaborate and create solutions that benefit the built environment. Building Innovation 2018: The National Institute of Building Sciences Sixth Annual Conference and Expo will take place January 8-11, 2018, at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, D.C.

The goal for the Conference is to explore strategies to Sustain. Strengthen. Secure. With preparations underway, the Institute’s Conference Planning Team is reaching out to Institute council and committee members and inviting industry professionals to present during the four-day Conference. Industry leaders with valuable insights, case studies, best practices, lessons learned and/or remaining challenges are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences with the broad audience of building industry stakeholders.

Building Innovation 2018 Opening Keynote to Highlight Ways to Sustain, Strengthen, Secure

The president of Thornton Tomasetti, Raymond P. Daddazio, EngScD, PE, will serve as the Opening Keynote Speaker during Building Innovation 2018: The National Institute of Building Sciences Sixth Annual Conference and Expo, to be held Tuesday, January 9, 8:00 am – 10:00 am ET, in Washington, D.C.

The Building Innovation 2018 theme is Sustain. Strengthen. Secure. In his presentation, Mr. Daddazio will build on that theme, focusing on resilience and how infrastructure plays a major role in securing our communities for the future. He will provide his insights; highlight case studies; share best practices, lessons learned and remaining challenges; as well as offer his thoughts on long-term planning, whole building design, sustainability and the interchange between buildings and supporting infrastructure from the engineering point of view.

Building Innovation 2018 Plenary Keynote to Explore U.S. Embassy in London

James Timberlake, FAIA, partner from KieranTimberlake, the architecture firm that designed the new U.S. Embassy in London, will serve as keynote speaker of the Plenary Luncheon, to be held 12:00 – 1:30 pm, Wednesday, January 10, during Building Innovation 2018: The National Institute of Building Sciences Sixth Annual Conference and Expo, in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Timberlake will discuss the concepts and integration required to design an embassy that reflects the core values of democracy—transparency, openness and equality—while providing a welcoming, secure, highly sustainable environment.

Building Innovation 2018 Sessions to Deliver 31 Hours’ Worth of Continuing Education

This is the industry’s only all-inclusive Conference where members of the entire building community come together to connect, collaborate and create solutions that benefit the built environment. The goal for Building Innovation 2018 is to explore strategies to Sustain. Strengthen. Secure. The Conference is delivering educational content designed to engage the entire building community, cover a variety of concepts and present diverse perspectives during each session to stimulate creative ideas, present new approaches and develop workable solutions for the entire building industry. Building Innovation 2018 sessions have received approval for a total of 31 Learning Units (LUs) from the American Institute of Architects, many of which are Health, Safety, Welfare (HSW) hours, as well as 31 contact hours from the International Code Council for a total of 3.1 CEUs. AIA and ICC members must provide their member numbers upon registration.

Building Innovation 2019 Opening Keynote to Talk about Resilience in NYC

New York City’s diverse building stock of over one million buildings is highly vulnerable to the hazards of a changing climate, including tidal and storm flooding in coastal neighborhoods, but also extreme heat, heavy precipitation and groundwater table rise throughout the city. While New York City’s Building Code facilitates physical resilience in new construction, the majority of the city’s buildings are approaching 100 years old. In his remarks, Wilson will share the context of New York City’s climate vulnerabilities, the work he and his colleagues in the Office of Resiliency are doing to address them and challenges in preparing buildings for coming climate hazards.

Building Innovation 2019 Plenary Keynote to Highlight AGU Net-Zero Energy Renovation

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) will complete the first-ever net-zero energy renovation of an existing commercial building in the District of Columbia in 2019, AGU’s Centennial. Janice Lachance, Esq., FASAE, AGU’s Executive Vice President, Strategic and Organizational Excellence, will provide an overview of the project as Keynote Speaker at the Plenary Luncheon, to be held 12:00 – 1:30 pm, Wednesday, January 9, during Building Innovation 2019: The National Institute of Building Sciences Seventh Annual Conference and Expo, in Washington, D.C.

Attend Building Innovation 2019; Stay for the BECx Workshop

Building Innovation 2019: The National Institute of Building Sciences Seventh Annual Conference and Expo, January 7-10, 2019, has a compelling schedule of educational sessions, including a number of building enclosure design presentations. Building enclosure professionals who attend the Conference will want to take part in the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) meeting Monday, the sessions on building enclosure design Tuesday and Wednesday, then stay for the building enclosure commissioning (BECx) Workshop Thursday, January 10, all at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, D.C.

BETEC began developing a building enclosure commissioning (BECx) certification training program in 2015. Following three days of Conference events and education sessions, BETEC will host the latest two BECx Certificate Course Modules at the Thursday BECx Workshop. The new BECx Modules include the BECx Standards and Process Module and the BECx Lab Testing Module.
