Joe Manganelli, AIA, CHFP, LEED AP BD+C, PhD, is a practicing registered architect and board-certified human factors professional, as well as a sustainable design specialist.
Joe’s goal is improving the capacity of the built environment to enhance human cognitive and physical health, well-being, and performance.
Joe is owner of xplr design, llc, a human factors consultancy, principal architect at Fluor, Inc., and adjunct faculty in the School of Information at Kent State University.
Joe’s research and practice integrate constructs and methods from architecture, human factors, systems engineering, cognitive science, evolutionary biology, and sustainability. His architectural practice has focused on advanced industrial facilities design. His human factors practice has focused on industrial, healthcare, and automotive concerns. In a twist, this background, which was developed to learn how to better design for humans, especially in task-oriented, mission-critical environments, has led more recently to research opportunities developing constructs and methods for human-centered cyber—physical systems, autonomous driving systems, as well as methods for monitoring and measuring system of systems performance of human-AI-robot teams.
Joe recently co-authored a book with Tarek Mokhtar titled, Coexistence and Coevolution of Humans and Intelligent, Adaptive Environments, on strategies for ethically developing AI-enabled ‘smart’ buildings. Joe is a member of the ANSI committee developing the first national human factors standard for systematically developing, testing, and validating human-AI-systems. Joe is the Cognitive Engineering and Decision-Making (CEDM) Technical Group Program Chair for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). Joe is on the NIBS Digital Twin Integration Committee (DTIC), leading the workgroup on assessing ROI and Perceived Value for integrating digital twins into facility development and operations.
