2026 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions
The 2026 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures is the 11th edition of a landmark national resource that advances earthquake-resistant design, construction, and building safety. Developed by the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), the 2026 edition brings together the latest research, engineering expertise, lessons from practice, and emerging technologies to inform the continued advancement of seismic design standards and model building codes.
Established by Congress in 1974, NIBS is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the built environment. Through BSSC, NIBS brings together expertise from government, industry, academia, research, and the building community to address complex seismic safety challenges and translate technical knowledge into practical, consensus-based recommendations.
The 2026 edition builds upon ASCE/SEI 7-22 and includes significant advancements in seismic hazard characterization, ground-motion procedures, liquefaction, fault displacement, soil-structure interaction, foundations, diaphragm design, nonlinear analysis, and new structural systems and technologies. It also introduces new guidance addressing functional recovery, supporting the broader goal of helping buildings and communities recover more effectively following an earthquake.
Development of the 2026 edition reflects an extensive collaborative effort involving nationally recognized seismic experts, technical committees, professional organizations, federal partners, and volunteers. NIBS and BSSC are proud to continue the longstanding role of the NEHRP Provisions in advancing seismic design practice and protecting lives, property, and communities.
